I did the show with very special guests Natasha & Tobias of Autumn Splendour this week. Dedee was at the Vector Arena getting ready for The Chemical Brothers show. I raced down after the show to join her. I only missed the first song.

This week's big festival highlight was Laneway, and we've got nothing but good things to say about it. Awesome venue - so good to have Aotea Square back and see it put to such great use! Great selection of food, and a truly brilliant line up. Even if !!! didn't make it cos of that stoopid delayed flight situation, the day still went off in a myriad of ways. Best bits were Warpaint, Blonde Redhead, Yeasayer, Beach House and Foals!! and Lawrence Arabia. There weren't any lowlights really.

Well done to Riff for winning himself the first of our amaaaazing Vans prize packs!

Dave did the first half (and a bit) of the show on his own this week, as it was my birthday week so I took a bit of extra beach time and arrived back in town on a special birthday cruise..
We dedicated 'Let It Be' by The Beatles to Islay the Ponsonby Road cat, who was often seen in Video Ezy and the office upstairs. She sadly passed away after she was hit by a car on Ponsonby Road :( R.I.P Islay, you'll be missed by many.
We also thought it was fitting to play this song cos we saw it on film at the Kings Arms at one of the Miles Gray movie nights. It was a surprise bonus at the end of the two Beatles films they were screening, and a pretty moving way to end the night.

With 2011 already racing past we find ourselves already amongst the frenzied build-up to this year's Big Day Out, kicking off the summer festival season for many - and there are many to look forward to! This week we featured some of our favourite gems, including William Shatner's brilliantly unhinged cover of 'Mr Tambourine Man', and Dave played some of his fave dance records - Golden Boy & Miss Kittin and Tok Tok Vs Soffy O.
We also featured a Muzai records section after dropping into one of their gigs at the Basement last Friday, and topped it all off with a special aural treat in the form of the Stop It And Tidy Up theme. (It's a kids cartoon if you didn't know - well worth checking out online.)

It makes sense that I'm still sitting here long after my flatmate has left, citing the usual excuses of work in the morning. Midnight on a Thursday is quite a late starting time it's true, but Noriko's music has such a hypnotic and calming effect that I see no reason to leave. It's centred and grounded, but at the same time weightless and floating like a gently glowing orb, her voice emanating out of it with a great sense of wonder and innocence. It wraps you up in that comfortable feeling you get just before a deep well-earned slumber. The music has a similar quality to Bjork's 'Headphones' or Thom Yorke's 'Atoms of Peace' but elevated by swathes of electro sound waves. Her voice has a purity to it, but it still makes me giggle during the first song when she sings words like 'sandoitchi' (sandwich) and 'koohi' (coffee) finally concluding the song with 'sports car'. Everything else she sings is in Japanese, which only makes me wish I could translate it for you. All that aside though, this was the most relaxing and magical performance I'd seen in ages. Well worth staying up for.

This was bit of an eventful show, we had a really stoked caller who phoned us about 4.30am still on a high from the Pharoahe Monche gig. He mentioned Che Fu and King Kapisi were at the gig too and kept saying how amazing the show was which was pretty cool. Had a few texts and Facebook messages from friends which was all good too. After we left the studio we came across a guy climbing down from the fountain in Albert Park while his friend finished off a quick morning dip. (I remember the days when you could still swim in the fountain at Summer Series! These days it looks like 6.30am on a weekday's the only time you'd get away with it) There were about five of them hanging round, they'd been up all night and had also climbed up some scaffolding onto the roof of a nearby art gallery! Good to know that people are still getting up to this kind of mischief in the wee small hours eh... :)

This week's show was loosely themed around melancholy/ambient/wistful/dreamy tunes. Thanks to regular listener Matt for ringing up with lots of useful requests, some of which we'll have to find for next week. The 5am gem was Slow Club - Sunday, and the 5.25am gem was Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You Into the Dark.
We ended the show with what I call 'the best break-up song in the whole world', Blur's 'No Distance Left To Run'.
At the end of the show there was no Matt Heath (or Kieran) for some reason, so we flicked it over to auto and left.. maybe we shoulda stayed and filled in for longer. I think Matt was a bit late cos he was reportedly 'sick as a dog' with a nasty cold. Poor bugger.

I just did another solo show for the first time in ages. It was quite fun actually, Dave was at home getting some beauty sleep before the big Music Awards bash tonight (The Tuis, or as we call them now, the VNZMAs) so I had the studio to myself and played all sorts of shit. The happy/wistful goodbye song for Real Groove magazine was 'Boy with the Arab Strap' a sweet and fitting tune by Belle & Sebastian. My ode to the whole Paul Henry debacle was The Strokes with 'Hard To Explain' (live in Sweden). I chose this in the end cos I find it hard to explain how we let it come to this, and secondly, why we're still going on about it. Let's move on people!

(Me - fairly stoked, especially to see LCD Soundsystem again, and M.I.A for the first time. Dave - bit harder to please cos he's not a local and doesn't have a nostalgic warm glow about BDO like the rest of us, also hates big crowds and stadium gigs like that so probly not his cup of tea anyway!)

If you don't like swear words look away now cos this week's show was entitled
'The Fuck Show'. No, it's not a new cruder name for the b's Sunday night chat show Sex After Six (but you should check that out) it was our celebration of songs with swear words in them!

After all, 95bFM once used the tagline 'bastion of swear words used properly'. (Or something like that. I used to have a bFM badge with that on it, I just remembered! *sniff* Lost it at a festival I think) So what better place to air a refreshing string of F-words C-words and shit-words from 4-6am in the morning? We didn't even get any complaints, just a string of friendly text messages. One of them just said 'SHAZAM!' We liked that. I might've got a bit carried away with our free for all swear word show in the first hour, so I toned it down for you guys just in case.

Also - this blog is looking a waaay too Playlist-y, we better do something and post some of our photos on here. Been a bit slack with that lately. I'm back to the point where I have a small backlog of great gig photos on my camera and no-one's really seen them yet. A tiny gap in the airwaves

Well this is a first. Neither me or Dave can make it tonight so the computer will be staying on auto this week.. so those of you who happen to tune in will just have to make do with those mighty fine playlist tunes and a severe lack of idle chit-chat and random phone interviews with musicians and poets.

I'd already planned to take this week off cos I've just started a new job that requires sleep, and Dave had some rotten luck and came down with a severe case of Wisdom Tooth Pain as of yesterday. He's on some very strong antibiotics now, but I'm sure the dental bill will hurt even more. Ouch! I'm just glad I didn't have to go through all that. Poor bugger :(

Now, if we can just invent a magic potion that means you don't need to sleep for seven hours every night.. or better still - pre-record some of our shows for the 4-6am slot, all our problems would be solved!

I've made Dave promise to add more podcasts to make up for lack of shows. So keep your eyes and ears peeled, I'll be sure to announce it on the Facebook group and Twitter when the Spinmaster Plantpot interview goes online..

I just posted my New Zealand International Film Fest reviews on our tumblr page, check it out on www.imaskew.tumblr.com

Dave set up our Tumblr a little while ago to have a play with, and now I've kinda taken it over cos he's gone off and started his own Tumblr page, which is really pretty and has lots of his electro covers, mashups and remixes on it.

Eventually we might move all of our Blog stuff over to Tumblr which is essentially another blog for me to post my reviews on. But for now I'm quite attached to both of them and am keeping them seperate, with all the playlists and podcasts on here, and all the random stuff and wordy reviews on there.

I have quite a few slightly blurry, very amateur live photos from recent gigs to post with some live reviews soon. So by using both Tumblr and Blogger side by side, it soon becomes obvious which one is more user friendly for posting videos and photos. (Especially for an impatient person like me, who thinks it should all be done in as little time as possible..)

So yes, look forward to lot more very amateur gig photos up here and on Tumblr soon!

Tiffany Singh's Newton & the Piece Bomb is fully activated through audience participation, as you can see from the photos.
I stopped by last Thursday to see how the work was evolving so far, and how many of the Piece Bombs had been released. The colours used are based on the chakras, which many of us will interpret as the colours of the rainbow.

Here's a few photos from the Die!Die!Die! music video shoot I took part in last Thursday. I first heard about it on Tasty and the Lamp's Top 10 show on bFM on the day before the shoot. Nice one b!
So I headed over to Pt Erin park on Thursday afternoon, fell out of a tree, and watched others fall out of trees. It was pretty fun actually. A nice sunny afternoon and plenty of soft landings on big blue gym mats. I've just posted two short videos of our 'stunts' for you to watch as well, if you like watching people fall out of trees.

Cassette Super Markets

On Saturday we headed to the Cassette Super Markets at Cassette Nine in Vulcan Lane. We're stoked that they've decided to have these every week!
If you get there early enough there's even some free beer to be had, apparently.

There's lots of little treasures to be found here - posh cupcakes, old records, cheap vintage clothing, handmade badges and pretty jewellery made of peacock feathers, but we did notice it's a little bit dark in some parts of Cassette. Maybe they're trying to preserve the ambience of the uber cool club that it is, but they could shed a tiny bit more light on things. Sometimes you do need to be able to see what it is you're buying. We still love these markets though, and we'll be back again for sure!

Farmville - The Silent Killer

Today, a look at The Southpark Files. What we have learnt from the greatest cartoon ever, or “I don’t give a flying f**k what you did on Farmville!”. I think Dave kind of missed the point of the Southpark episode we just watched spoofing Facebook. It was called ‘You have 0 Friends’.

During this episode we see Kyle enjoying a game of Farmville on his Facebook page, and later in a weaker moment when he’d lost all his friends, pleading Stan to visit his farm and fertilise his crops. It was insane, humiliating and above all hilarious. So you can imagine my disappointment when Dave’s response was to go and try out Farmville for himself.

‘Oh yeah, Farmville, I wonder what that’s like?’, ‘What!?’ Before I knew it he was in there arranging the layout on his ‘virtual farm’. I may have to delete him as a friend. Delete my own boyfriend?! That’s ok, I don’t have my relationship status showing on Facebook cos I decided to leave some details out and not have them splayed all over the internet. (*cough*)

The sound of that annoyingly calming Farmville music is designed to lull you into a false state of relaxation as you let your life pass you by playing another pointless yet harmless online game. As Dave sows pretend crops in his cutesy virtual farm it’s like the sound of my life ending. This swings so far off the irony meter I almost love it. He doesn’t even eat green beans or tomatoes in real life of course, but he’s happy to spend time planting them here to earn, ooh ‘Farmville coins’!! It kind of staggers me.

Before he even gets to start planting he has to choose his gender, skin colour, eye colour, and one of a huge range of hairstyles. I liked the purple mohawk. Oh no, he’s just ‘added me as a neighbour’. I might feel obliged to help him out now. Or I could just delete him as a friend.

We both found it hilarious that you can actually pay real money (in US dollars!) through Paypal to build homes and paths and stuff. Anything from $5 to $50. Unbelievable. So kids, if you’re still on the respectable side of the social networking fence, spare yourself the therapeutic yet inane pleasures of games like Farmville.

Don’t respond to this article by logging on trying it. You’ll just get hooked, it’s too easy. A friend of mine (we’ll call him Exhibit B) responded to my anti Farmville comment on F***book with this sad tale:

“Blocked it - got addicted for a while sad to say last year but soo soo over it - biggest time waster ever - saps your will to live really - now if I even look at a graphic I feel ill”

This man is a great friend of mine, who I still had some respect for. I say ‘had’ til he told me got all the way to Level 20 something! Just kidding, I do still respect him for coming forward with his story of surival and for kicking the habit. All power to you Mr B, may you never hit such a low point again. He summed it up well with this: “It's a silent killer - you go on the computer to do something and you find yourself buying hay bales and rearranging your farm layout. and then checking back and finding yourself excited when your crops are ready. Tragic state of affairs”. Yep, it’s a slippery slope. Next stop Bejewled Blitz! Another time-wasting gem if there ever was one. Honestly, I think I preferred Dave’s addiction to f—king Transport Tycoon. At least that had some point to it. Sort of.

Dave won’t be letting Farmville status updates bring shame to his profile, he’ll be staying firmly in the closet as a fledgling Farmville addict. These are the kind of status updates that really turn me off Facebook! As I’m writing this Dave proudly announces he now has a chicken. I helpfully type on his status ‘I have a small cock on Farmville.’ but am swiftly tackled before I can hit the ‘Share’ button. Damn, so close!

He insists he’s trying the game just for research purposes, for the layout, and character design, to help with his first attempt at creating his own video game -‘King of Wicking’. I sure as hell hope so. But here’s the thing, don’t you find virtual food games (like Farmville or Caféworld or whatever else) just make you wanna grow your own actual food and eat it? Or go away and make a real chocolate sundae?

So I guess arguably, if you’re a proactive kind of person, Farmville could potentially be better for your health, if it made you want to start your own vegetable garden. But it won’t. It might just stop you ever venturing outside again.

Oh no. Now Dave’s whining at me to send him a Magnolia Tree. A Magnolia Tree?! “Oh come on! Please send me one! The Magnolia Tree’s are gorgeous!” he says, pleading. I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Yesterday he wouldn’t have known a Magnolia Tree if I'd smacked him in the face with one. C’mon now, say it with me “My name's Dave and I’m a Farm-a-holic.” A tragic state of affairs indeed.

It's Dedee here, I can't make it to the show tonight. Thursday morning meetings beckon, meaning I might just need a few more hours sleep. Looking forward to returning to the studio next week! In the meantime Dave's whipped up another excellent playlist that should keep you well entertained, from some of his favourite glitchy electronica to some over indulgent wallowing in a moody Radiohead track. Stay tuned for all sorts of treats.

It's been a big week of course, that Icelandic volcanic disruption making Europe seem even further away with all those planes stuck on the ground. But we've come through it and it turns out it wasn't the end of the world after all. Just a slight delay. A bit of time for us all to stay in and watch more telly as it gets colder.
But stop, wait, don't do that! There's still plenty of stuff to do so no need to get bored and complacent.

For starters..
The 2010 NZ International Comedy Festival starts on the 23rd of April running up til 16th May,
Then there's the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival from 12-16 May.

Then there's another bunch of great gigs, Dimmer playing the Kings Arms this Friday, Wilco playing the Civic next week, and that trio of Sound Rocket gigs at the Masonic Tavern in Devonport we mentioned last week - consisting of an acoustic pop night on the 8th of May, a Rock night on the 15th of May, and an R'n'b Hip Hop night on the 22nd of May.

Oh, and it's the tenth anniversary of New Zealand Music Month in May too.
